Japanese Lidded Lacquer Bowl

Japanese Lidded Lacquer Bowl

This lidded bowl has such a distinctive color and design. The high-shine of the finish on the dark red bowl with a fitted lid and scalloped sides really draws the eye in for a closer look. The oak leaves and acorn design on the top of this Japanese red lacquer lidded bowl appear to be hand painted but there is no markings on the piece to verify that fact. The creamy accent color used to outline with scalloped edge coordinates so well with the oak leaves. All in all, a very charming piece. I think it would make a great addition to the fall mantel with the dark colors and acorn painting.

There are small smudges and scrapes in the finish of the piece, primarily on the black inside the bowl and the bottom of the lid. There are also a few nicks in the rim of the base. The painted design is in wonderful shape, but for missing the base of the gray acorn (you can see it in one of the pictures). II did not even notice it was missing when I saw it at the estate sale, it is that subtle. The handle on the top of the lid is firmly attached but lists a bit to the side.
