Vintage ISCO Papier Mache Butler Tray: Occupied Japan Floral Decor

Vintage ISCO Papier Mache Butler Tray: Occupied Japan Floral Decor
$35.00
This vintage pressed papier mache butler tray has the most amazing presence. Additionally it is marked on the back ISCO Made in Occupied Japan which makes it a collectible piece from that early 1940s period. (I was told by the Estate sales personnel that this was purchased in Japan during that time frame, not an import) The piece has a rich color palette with a background of deep black and a highly stylized set of peonies in orange and yellow as the center design. Greenery and flower buds complete the bouquet. The edges have a gold rim and gold accent brush strokes. There are two handles on each end and an angled lip around the entire perimeter. The piece is finished with a high gloss covering on the painted surfaces. It has a very substantial feel.
This versatile Hollywood Regency tray is a perfect choice for serving drinks or snacks, or could also be hung on the wall as a form of vintage art. The piece is also nicely sized for use on a hall table to corral magazines and other mail, or can be placed on a dresser to safely store perfume bottles along with brushes and other sundry items. I remember my Grandmother had a very similar tray on her dresser and it was always a favorite of mine. I used to love to look at all her perfume and powder bottles and run my hands along the flowered surface of the tray. Good memories!
The tray is in amazing vintage condition with no spots of paper loss and only the slightest paint loss in the center design. The gold rim shows the most usage wear.
The back of the tray is painted a neutral color with the same high gloss finish. It has some light scuffs and bears a red stamp with the ISCO in a diamond shape and "MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN" beneath. Interesting note about this time frame: During the Occupation period, from 1945 to 1952, U.S. customs required goods imported from Japan stamped with "Occupied Japan." Many U.S. military men stationed in Japan brought these goods home as souvenirs.
There are three of these trays available. This black one and two orangish red items which are available in a separate listing. A 20% discount is offered if all three are purchased. Just send me a message and we can coordinate.
