Antique Haviland & Co. Limoges Side Plates with Hand Painted Gold Designs

Antique Haviland & Co. Limoges Side Plates with Hand Painted Gold Designs

$18.00
I spied these small side plates at a sale and thought they had a unique look - and would compliment so many styles of table ware to add an antique touch!

The markings on these pieces are H & Co with a line and then DEPOSE underneath that indicates Haviland & Co. Limoges. From the Haviland Blank and Decorator Marks diagram I found in my research these marks indicates the plate is from the 1880 - 1890s. Variations of the H & Co stamp are found and some date as early as the 1860's. There are 2 marks on the back of Antique Haviland china - one represents the manufacturer and the other represents the decorator. If there is just one mark the china was sold as whiteware and usually decorated elsewhere.

So, my supposition is that these are antique Haviland white, scalloped edge side plates that have had coordinating gold accent trim applied. There are three variations;

1- Brown outside rim with gold dots and three dot accent at each scallop break
2 - Gold star like designs with gold dots along the rim; full stars at scallop breaks and half stars in between
3 - Gold exclamation points of various sizes around the outside rim.

All the gold paint is applied thickly to add texture. #2 and #3 have no flaws in the paint. #1 has some variation in the outside brown rim that I am not certain was as originally conceived (there may be some paint rubbing). These paintings are really nicely executed and bring a wonderful dimension to the antique plates.

The plates are in really nice condition, especially considering their age. The surface is still quite shiny and there is little to no paint loss on the design. Their are no noticeable usage marks on the plates. No chips, cracks or crazing. Special!
