What an amazing find - and it works like a charm! This would be perfect for use in your craft room, retail store, or as a home décor piece. It is a really nostalgic paper roll cutter (probably used in a general store?) made by Bulman Mfg. Co., Grand Rapids, Michigan and is circa around the 1940s era.
It is made of heavy cast metal with a spring design for the blade and a wood top. The "blade" isn't a blade at all, just meant to hold the paper in line and easily tear. It maybe could be sharpened a bit, but it works as is and is less dangerous without a sharp edge. There are mounting holes on the bottom of the metal base feet to allow you to mount it to a surface. It has a newer replacement wooden dowel.
It has a great aged patina with wonderfully condition to the wood top and some surface rust and wear from years and years of use on the metal parts. The bolts on the top are also quite oxidized. It's in overall wonderful solid condition and, as mentioned above, the paper cutter still works nicely although I think bolting it to a surface would make it work much better. See the video for operation.
The original label is complete and on the front of the blade. It reads: Bulman Spring Paper Cutter Pat Nos.909750-1400521-1573141-2 234818 Other Pat Pend. There is also the logo for The E.O. Bulman Mfg. Co. Inc. Steel Store Equipment Grand Rapids Mich.
There is currently a roll of heavy brown craft paper on the dowel that is 8" wide and 1 3/4" wide. It appears that the maximum roll size that it could accommodate is 9”.
Dimensions:
12 1/2" wide, 6" deep at feet, 12" tall
