Vintage Lancaster and Sandland Copper and Pink Cream and Sugar Set

Vintage Lancaster and Sandland Copper and Pink Cream and Sugar Set

$16.00
This is a beautiful little open sugar bowl and creamer from Lancaster Sandland Ltd with a copper and pink luster design. These could be used at a tea party or dinner as an individual service. It would be fun to mix and match these pieces with other individualized sized cream and sugar sets at each place setting, or use a favors for a wedding shower. They are just so cheerful that I would find used for them everywhere!

The pieces were coated inside and out with a white glaze. A soft pale pink glaze was applied to the inside rim and bowl edge and the outside from the rim to the center where the creamer has a straight form. Copper luster glaze was applied to circle the rim, base and center of both pieces and covers the handle. The pink glaze and copper luster was also used to form patterns to show the coloring of the flowers. The flowers are on the outside of the creamer and bowl and the inside of the bowl as well.

They are marked on the back Lancaster and Sandland LTD Hanley England in green ink. I believe by the back mark and the history of the company that these are from the early 1950s.

There are no chips or cracks in either piece, and no noted crazing. The finish is still glossy smooth. Interesting, the design on the outside of the creamer looks like the large pink flowers are intersected with a cream colored band. I'm not sure if this is the intention, or this piece has a manufacturing flaw. Also, the inside rim of the creamer has a foreign substance on it that indicates it may have been used as a candle holder at one time? Not sure and I think it would clean off no problem. There is some loss to the paint on the inside rim of the creamer and the top rim of the bowl as well.

Information I learned about this producer is:

They were a manufacturer of earthenware at the Dresden works at an area named Tinkersclough, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. From 1944 the business was renamed Lancaster & Sandland when, Sandland became a partner in the company. The company went into voluntary liquidation in November 1968.
