Ed Gifford Vintage Signed Original Watercolor of an Amish Barn Summer Still Life

Ed Gifford (1927-1998) was born and lived most of his life in and around Akron, Ohio. Gifford was known for his strong, simple statements of nostalgic Americana scenes, particularly of Amish Country in Northeastern Ohio. Gifford painted or etched in an Impressionistic/realistic style. His mother, Mrs. Eva Dettling Gifford, was a well-known area artist and passed on many of her attributes to her son. Gifford was a member of the American Artists Professional League and the WPA (Whiskey Painters of America) society. His works are represented in both private and corporate art collections around the world.

This original watercolor is a charming summer Amish farm still life that depicts a rain barrel and bucket outside a homestead with a smattering of daisies softening the edges of the elements. The summer light is reminiscent of late afternoon. Bringing some life to the image is the sunlight reflecting off the back window in the house and a little red winged blackbird, a signature of Gifford's painting style - everyday rural scenes with touches of beauty. The painting is signed in the lower left Ed Gifford.

The painting is framed under glass in an appropriately simple barnboard frame with lots of rustic charm from the visible knots and holes in the wood. The frame is really perfect for the mood of the piece. It does have some slight separation in the corners. There is also a textured soft white mat surrounding the piece, as framed. The overall condition of the painting is excellent, with no evidence of paint loss or overpainting.

The visible image measures approximately 16” x 10”, and the overall framed dimensions measure 25” x 20 1/4” x 2 1/2".

This a charming painting by a highly collectible artist that would make a wonderful addition to any collection of Gifford’s work.
