This hardbound book, Coaching Children in English, Copyright 1944 by Sherwin Cody was published by Good English Publishers. It includes the textbook by Mr. Cody for the first 100+ pages and the English in a Nutshell for Children Pupil's Workbook for the last 68 pages. It is a handy little book that brings special attention to the importance of English for school graduation. "Because English is such an everyday matter and we use it so unconsciously, it is the most intangible and elusive of subjects." as noted in the Preface. The conclusion in the Preface is telling, "Many have found this method of teaching English makes it the most thrilling subject in the school curriculum instead of the most hated.

Mr. Cody was an American writer and entrepreneur who developed a long-running home-study course in speaking and writing and a signature series of advertisements asking “Do You Make These Mistakes in English?” He published essays, books and articles from 1893 through 1950.

The heavy fabric of the cover is a bright red with black writing for the title and the binding. The binding reads Coaching Children in English - Cody. 175 pages that are rip and mark free. The text is interspersed with wonderful black and white cartoons, charts, diagrams and images. The opening page has a stamp Board of Education Jan 1937 City of Chicago and 1128 in the upper left hand corner.

The book is in very nice condition with random wear marks on the front and back cover. The top and bottom edges of the binding are ruffed. There are no extraneous written marks on the pages. The pages of the book have darkened considerably with age.

This would be a wonderful book to add to your home school classroom or work from home office. Or, how about a wonderful gift for a middle school teacher as part of a gift basket. Very charming!
