Vintage Hand Colored Animal Lithograph Spelling Cards

Vintage Hand Colored Animal Lithograph Spelling Cards

$35.00
This is a really incredibly detailed set of lithograph animal prints that are segmented to be a learning tool - I think? I really couldn't find anything quite like these in my research and there was no additional information forthcoming from the Estate sale. I couldn't pass them up though. The art work and interesting assortment of birds and animals portrayed make them quite unique.

There are 6 in the set; Bison, Wolf, Elephant, Kangaroo, Waxwing and Grouse. Each is equally detailed and appear to be hand colored lithographs. They are segmented into horizontal strips that have letters to spell out the name of the image.

At some point in their lives, they were lightly taped onto cardboard backing and then covered with heavy plastic protection. This has kept their condition to be very nice, although they do some some aging as would be expected after 80+ years. There is no manufacturer markings or dating. I am estimating them to be from the 1930s or 1940s based on the style of the artwork and the paper used. The heavy plastic and masking tape to hold them together actually shows the most aging. Some of the tape to hold the strips onto the cardboard backings has lost its stickiness as well.

These were likely part of an educational game or teaching aid and would be a really fun back to school or teacher gift or addition to your vintage card collection. Note - these images, if not used in a learning capacity, make GREAT ephemera for crafts: Scrapbooking, card making, journaling, junk journals, mixed media art, college, decoupage, tags-limited by your own imagination!
