Mabel Pyne's books from the 1940s are a favorite. I couldn't believe my good fortune when I found a set of two of them at a recent Estate Sale.

Book 1 - "The Little Geography of the United States" by Mabel Pyne (author and illustrator) from Houghton Mifflin Company Copyright 1941.

1 - There are wonderful illustrations by Mabel Pyne throughout the entire book, on the cover and on every page
2 - There are 36 pages that teach a little about boundaries and capitals, but much about the mountains and lowlands, rivers and lakes, towns and people that make the United States.
3 - There are full maps of the United States on the front and back fly leaves. They alone are enough to spend hours of perusal.
4 - Written in 1940s proper English prose. Sentences like: Three Johns John James Audubon John Muir John Burroughs explored the forests and wrote of the quiet woods, the roaring waterfalls, the closing bear, the singing birds. People began to think of saving some of this.
