Vintage Reproduction Paya Rabbit and Jumping Dog Set (2) from 1928 Mold

My parents owned a Collectibles and Toy store back in the 1990s. They had a wonderful assortment of collectible stuffed animals and folk art toys, but too many to keep now that they have retired. I will be listing quite a few items from their collection over the next few weeks so stay tuned if you are a collector of cute or collectible things!

Wow! What a wonderful set of Reproduction tinplate litho animals from Paya of Spain. Their design and construction comes from the original set from 1928 entitled rabbit and jumping dog. They come in the original packaging from 1995 with the front label indicating Reproduccion Juguete Paya Ref 679/4 Conejo Y Perro Saltador - 1928 (Reproduction Toy - Paya Toy Model 679/4 Rabbit and Jumping Dog - 1928)

Included in the box are two pieces that were issued in 1995. They are # 450 of 5,000 limited edition pieces. This information is contained on the Certificate of Ownership included in the box.

The two pieces are really adorable. The rabbit has yellow felt ears and a basket on his back, he has a red, white and blue bow around his neck. The dog has a red collar. They are both tawny colored with facial details. Both have a metal bar sticking out of their chests, and the pictures on the label show that same bar. There does not seem to be a key and I am not sure if there was originally a key or the bar was to be turned with your own tools. We were able to turn the bar easily but not able to get them to "jump". I suspect things have gotten tight during storage and may be able to be remedied with the right tools and some patience. Otherwise, they are in really nice condition. They have been stored in the original boxes since the 1990s and seem to be in untouched condition. I have priced them to reflect the lack of movement.

Here is a summary of the background of these "toys" and the company that made them that I found in my research:

The Paya Company was founded in 1902 by Rafael Paya, the local smith. Four years later Rafael's sons Pascual, Emilio and Vincente built the first toy factory in Spain and by the 1920s Paya's toys were considered the equal of then great and famous toy makers to the north.

Not only was Paya quality the equal of Marklin of Germany, but Paya's colours and imprints were graphically more interesting, precise and bolder. The 1930s, with Raimundo Paya at the helm, was the time of great expansion. This was when the famous Bugatti race car was made. In 1946, Paya once again started making toys. In 1985, Lino made the decision to remake all of the classic old litho tinplate toys on a very limited basis. The production of each was limited to 5,000 (or less) world-wide. Of the 2000 toys manufactured by Paya between 1906 to 1940, a total of 50 historic models have been recovered. These are now made in series with an issue limit of 5000 numerated pieces, accompanied by their certificates of authenticity.
