Vintage Book and Hand-Painted Folk Art Box Set

Vintage Book and Hand-Painted Folk Art Box Set
$35.00
When I found this adorable vintage folk art wooden storage box with hand painted people adorning the top of the box, I thought it would be the perfect companion to the vintage Children of Many Lands book I gathered earlier. What a wonderful box to contain a gift for someone as well. The box alone is the gift! I have a similar one on my desk at work and it does the best job at corralling all the little things that collect on a desk while looking adorable. The photos show how they compliment each other so well!
Box - This little box is solid wood and the lid easily lifts off, giving you a small amount of storage. This would be perfect for storing a ring or a great addition to your bedside table. The two little boys and two little girls on top are hand painted. There is some measure of paint loss on the hats, primarily and some dirtiness to the paint. It would benefit from a gentle cleaning. Dimensions: 1 3/4" wide x 2 1/2" high
Book - Children of Many Lands by Laura Rountree Smith, Illustrations by Helen Hodge. Published in 1935 by A. Flanagan Company, Copyright 1917, 1924. Laura Rountree Smith was a prolific children's book author and musician. She wrote many popular stories featuring bunnies and elves as the leading characters. She was born in 1876 and passed in 1924. This book, Children of Many Lands, was a departure from her more fantastical stories of animal characters and portrays 10 Stories to be used in the school year, staring with September Stories of Children of Mexico and ending with June Stories Indian Children. Other countries represented are India, Egypt, Japan, Eskimo-Land, Zululand, Holland, Arabia and China. Each month's stories have an accompanying black and white illustration.
While no longer culturally correct in today's language, it is fascinating to read of the portrayal of children from countries that were considered quite exotic when this was written in 1917. That alone is worth the cultural conversation with your child! The book was part of the Findlay Public Library and has the stickers, stamps and check out papers included in the front and back portion of the book. It is in fairly rough condition with a few rips on pages and spots where rips have been taped. The pages have darkened with age as well. The orange cloth hard cover has quite a bit of edge and corner wear. Dimensions: 7 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 1/2"
Sold as a Set of Two (Box and Book)
