Antique Patriotic Décor Set

Came across this book, "Our Country's Call to Service" by J.W. Studebaker (Superintendent of Schools , Des Moines Iowa) and was intrigued. It was entitled as A Manual of Patriotic Activities Through the Schools and has a 1918 Copyright. Then, I spied this wooden canister at a sale and was intrigued. I thought it would be a great piece to add to a Patriotic display for Independence Day, Presidents Day, Veterans Day or other occasions honoring those who have served our Country. Little did I know it was likely a promotional item from the 7-20-4 Cigar company - I still think it works for décor!

These two pieces have come together for this listing as Patriotic Décor items and I think they would look great together on your mantel or shelf.

1 - "Our Country's Call to Service," by J. W. Studebaker, subtitled "A Manual of Patriotic Activities Through the Schools." Scott, Foresman and Company, 1918 Copyright. It was published towards the end of WWI it strives to encourage good citizenship through various organizations and encourages conservation and thrift in America. The book is 224 pages long and contains photographs, charts, illustrations and diagrams to bring the content alive. Many of the sections of the manual have a Question and Answer section at the end to encourage understanding of the subject.

The book has a heavy paper cover with a light blue background and dark blue lettering featuring Uncle Sam. There is age wear to the cover with curled edges. The binding is still quite tight. A name is written in pencil on the front cover. No other writing in the book and the pages are in amazing condition, only darkened a bit from age. Dimensions: 7 1/4" x 5 1/4" x 1/2"

2 - 7-20-4 Brand wooden canister shaped like a bullet or missile with a painted gray top. The wood canister is wrapped in a gray paper with red lettering indicating, Remember the Boys at the Front and 7-20-4 on both sides. I have not been able to find any other piece like this but I believe it is a cigar canister from the R. G. Sullivan 7-20-4 Cigar Factory in Manchester New Hampshire. Wonder if it was a promotional piece? The paint on the top is a bit scuffed and the back of the paper wrapper is scraped and missing the top colorful layer. There is also remnants of a price sticker on the bottom. Mystery item that looks fabulous with the book! They seem to be of the same time frame. Dimensions: 9" x 2 3/8" diameter
