This is a first edition of "The Trees" by Conrad Richter published in 1940 by Alfred A. Knopf. The book was the first in the famous trilogy, The Awakening Lands, set in 1795, which awarded the author with the title of greatest American mid-century novelist. What a fascinating peek into the first part of the 20th Century in America. "The Trees" by Conrad Richter is a moving story of the beginning of the American trek to the west. Here, in the first novel of Conrad Richter's Awakening Land trilogy, the Lucketts, a wild, woods-faring family, lived their roaming life, pushing ever westward as the frontier advanced and as new settlements threatened their isolation.

About the Author:
Before becoming one of America’s greatest novelists, Conrad Richter (1890–1968) worked driving a wagon over the mountains of Pennsylvania, in a machine shop, in a small-town bank, on a farm, in his own timber business, and reporting for newspapers, among other jobs. A dogged researcher, he wrote fifteen novels, most of them set on the American frontier, including The Light in the Forest and The Sea of Grass, as well as numerous short stories. His novels won the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and many other accolades.

There were many reviews of this book online from readers; here is a glimpse into how well it was received:

"I read the trilogy back in the '70s and was enthralled. I re-read the books every few years now, and find them richer and more beautiful every time. Richter's way with the language of the people and times is rare and valuable to anyone who is interested in how our country grew. This trilogy is one of the jewels of my book collection and one that I love to share." - Online review on book site

The light blue fabric cover, with a navy design and red lettering shows it's age with darkening along the binding edge and fraying at the corners. The blue of the cover is lighter on the binding than the front and back from exposure to light. The binding is still intact and no pages are falling our. There is no stray writing on any of the pages, nor are there any rips or tears to the paper. There is a book plate ownership sticker on the front page for B. Mary Hall. The pages have darkened considerably with age. Only slight musty odor when the book is opened.

A treasure!
