Wouldn't this be lovely in your sun porch, florists studio, changing room, kitchen, bathroom - anywhere actually!

This is a painting, depicting a young lady arranging flowers at a work table and signed "J. Chardin". It bears a strong resemblance to the works of Jean-Siméon Chardin, an 18th-century French painter renowned for his still lives and domestic scenes. Chardin's originals are rare and typically housed in major museums.

Interestingly, Chardin's meticulous attention to everyday subjects earned him the admiration of later artists, including Paul Cézanne, who considered Chardin a master of still life. This enduring influence led to numerous reproductions and studies of his work in subsequent centuries.

Given the signature and subject matter, it's plausible that this piece is a later reproduction or homage, possibly from the 19th or early 20th century, when Chardin's style experienced a resurgence in popularity. (There is a notation on the back of the frame that may indicate 1913.) This is based on an appraisers opinion. It could be newer yet, but it has a very old school, French feel and is very, very lovely!

The piece is currently housed in a fairly elaborate gold painted frame with etched designs and a white wash finish. It does a nice job enhancing the piece.

The piece is in very nice condition with brushstrokes evident. There are two small marks in the brown background in the upper right hand corner. They likely could be touched up with a deft hand, but also are not at all obvious when the piece is hanging. The frame is in nice condition as well. The corners are slightly separating and there are a few nicks in the painted finish, but no large blemishes. There is a hanging wire on the back.
