Ladies Home Journal Simple Simon Has His Day April 1923 Uncut Paper Doll

$32.50
This is an original 1923 color print of paper dolls drawn by American illustrator, Gertrude A. Kay (1884-1939), that published in the Ladies' Home Journal April 1923, Page 27. My research indicates that beginning in 1923, Gertrude created illustrated paper doll inserts for magazines like Ladies Home Journal and Pictorial Review. This would be one of the first pieces she completed as it is dated April 1923. Her most popular characters were two children named Polly and Peter Perkins introduced in the early 1930s, who she regularly illustrated to be cut out and played with in a variety of scenarios. Popular pages of Kay's Adventures of Polly and Peter Perkins paper doll series included themes of wedding fashion, gardening, the old woman who lived in a shoe, Valentine's Day, and Christmas.

The copy on this piece indicates:
Simple Simon Has His Day Illustrations By Gertrude A. Kay (The story of Simple Simon is on page 28.)
Directions
Paste the entire page on a piece of very heavy wrapping paper, and when the paste is dey cut out the various figures around the outside dark outline. To make Simple Simon stand, cut the base on which he stands into three parts, bending forward on the red dotted line, and back on the blue dotted lines. To make the goose stand, bend back on the blue dotted lines. Run your scissors between the double dark lines at the top of the stirrup and on the goose's back; the put Mother Goose's foot into the opening above the stirrup and insert the tab on her skirt into the opening above the goose's back. When she sits on the stool push the tab on her skirt through the double dark lines of the opening which is to be cut between the legs of the stool.

There are 6 images on the page - Mother Goose and her hat, Simple Simon and his hat, Goose and stool for Mother Goose to sit on. The color scheme is mostly shades of red and blue with white areas. The colors are still quite bright and appear to be representative as originally published. There is a bit of an uneven edge in the center middle from being removed from the staple in the magazine. April, 1923 Ladies' Home Journal 27 runs along the top. The back contains the first page of the Simple Simon Has His Day story as written by Sarah Addington with a black and white illustration by Gertrude A. Kay. The notation at the end indicates the story continues on Page 52.

This is in really amazing shape considering how long it has been a memento for someone. I can only imagine that is was special to someone to have been kept in this condition for so long. It would be wonderful to add to a Paper Doll collection or use in décor - be creative!
